In an acquisition, the market cap helps determine whether a takeover candidate represents a good value for the acquirer.

Market Cap = Total amount of available stock x Price

To put this into context for Guild Wars 2, we can calculate how big the market is for a specific item. In other words, how much gold is sitting in one item theoretically.
Let's say we want to know how big the Market Cap for Mystics Coins are. Naturally, would determine the supply first and the lowest available price for the coins. For instance, let's assume that there are 5,000,000 available coins for sale (Supply) and the lowest sell price is. Then we would do:

How to use it?
You can use the Market cap to your advantage in multiple ways. For instance, if an item has a stable Market Cap, that means that the item is less volatile to price spikes and therefore a mature investment option.
The other way around, if the item has spikes in Market cap, then that can indicate a volatile price which can be beneficial if you like to flip the item.
Generally speaking, if the Market Cap is high then the item also has high velocity. High Velocity = Item gets traded often.
