Market capitalization or "Market Cap", represents the total market value of a company's outstanding shares of stock. However, we adapted the formula here a bit and actually do an exact calculation by taking the available listings for the item and calculate the Market Cap from that.
How to use it?
You can use the Market cap to your advantage in multiple ways. For instance, if an item has a stable Market Cap, that means that the item is less volatile to price spikes and therefore a mature investment option.
The other way around, if the item has spikes in Market cap, then that can indicate a volatile price which can be beneficial if you like to flip the item.
Generally speaking, if the Market Cap is high then the item also has high velocity. High Velocity = Item gets traded often.

In Guild Wars 2 this can be a useful metric to know whether or not an item moves a lot. For instance, the higher the Volume 24h is, the more likely your sell/buy order will get fulfilled. Likewise Volume 24h represents popularity in an item which can make a difference in deciding which item to invest in.
How to use it?
If an item has high volume 24h, you can be sure that it is a competitive item to flip. At the same time, if the general trend is steadily going upwards and there is high volume, then the item can be seen as a good long term investment.
